Period Living for the 21st Century
OUR STUDENT CONTEST FOR 2014
WINNER - SILENT HERALD HOTEL DUNDEE
By Alex Morariu
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR COMPETITION
Our annual competition is aimed at providing an opportunity for students from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds (interior design, interior decoration, architectural interiors). It will be commencing on 1st April 2014 and entitled ‘Period Living for the 21st Century’. The competition entries should explore how thinking can help achieve this without threat to the heritage of a historic building. The subject of this year’s competition is : “How should the designer relate to historic design in the 21st Century?”
The first prize is £500 worth of goods from www.thevictorianemporium.com or £200 of Amazon vouchers.
The competition will give you the opportunity to voice ideas on how we relate to our history and demonstrate that a designer working within historic building contexts requires more than the specialist skills of preservation and conservation. Your entry should examine any future requirements of period living in a forever changing world.
WHAT WE NEED
We strongly encourage that you try to concentrate on one main area that encourages people to use old buildings - although our preference as The Victorian Emporium is for 19th century buildings - examples of these areas of thought may be purely about aesthetics, use of a building, accessibility, education or take into account current trends such as Steampunk - however, whatever your focus, your ideas must clearly illustrate the positive values of historic buildings - any contextual research will also be encouraged.
The preferred format of the entry should be in the form of a written document or a design proposal with a short 1 supporting written explanation, but video can also be used if you feel this would best explain your ideas.
