In most period houses there are fireplaces in every room. In the reception rooms, these tend to be a really lovely feature around which the room is arranged, with colourful decorative fireplace tiles both sides of the hearth and a nice mantelpiece above. There is nothing more lovely than sitting down to a good meal on a cold day in a period dining room with the fire burning in the grate.
