Diagonal cross and fleur-de-lys decoration
Design 11 features a diagonal cross outlined by contrasting bands. These lines divide the square into four triangular sections, each containing a fleur-de-lys motif pointing towards the centre.
The long central points and curled side lobes of the motifs soften the angular framework. In the photograph, buff-coloured ornament and bands stand against a reddish-brown background.
Creating a repeating geometric floor
Repeat Design 11 in aligned rows to establish a regular arrangement of diagonal lines and inward-facing motifs. The bands extend to the tile edges, making their alignment across joints an important part of the overall pattern.
Dry-lay several tiles before fixing to check the repeat. Alternatively, use individual tiles as decorative insets within a plain geometric floor, where the diagonal cross provides a clear focal point.
