Radiating leaves and curling scrolls

Design 52 features four three-leaf sprigs pointing outwards from a small central ring. Between them, broad stems divide into curling foliage and larger leaves that reach towards the corners.

The open arrangement allows the background colour to trace the curves of the pattern. In the photograph, buff-coloured decoration stands against red, clearly defining the pointed leaf tips and rounded scrolls.

Genuine ceramic encaustic decoration

Contrasting coloured clays form the pattern, which extends below the surface of the ceramic tile. This is genuine encaustic construction rather than a printed encaustic-effect finish.

Building a repeating floor pattern

Repeat Design 52 in aligned rows to create a grid of radiating botanical motifs. Each tile contains a complete design, so it can also be used as an individual inset among plain geometric tiles.

For a more restrained scheme, space the decorative tiles apart and frame the floor with a simple border. Compare the dimensions, thickness and colours of all adjoining tiles before confirming the layout.

When matching an existing Victorian floor, check the central ring, three-leaf sprigs and corner foliage carefully against the original pattern.
